The Lemon Meringue Sprang Experiment! (Part 2)

This was an experiment inspired by .

For the beginning of the project and more info about what Sprang is: [link]

After making the two Sprang pieces, they were cut off of the loom and steamed. The tops of the two pieces were consolidated onto one yellow braid which had been the warp cord for one piece. This forms the center seam at the crown of the hat. The remainder of the braid is whip-stitched around the top back edges to further form the hat.

The ends of the scarves are gathered by their warp cords and end in the tassels. I love it! Especially the tassels, they’re the best part. Since this was the first time I’d tried making this particular thing I think the experiment went rather well. There weren’t any big hitches, but I did learn a lot. There are a few things that I would do differently if I make another. Such as not using a secondary color for the border. I also would not use a smaller gauge of yarn for the stripes. I think that it looks neat with the doubled yellow strands, but it was very annoying to work, lol.

Thanks for looking!

OH MY!
sorry i have been unable to get back to you until now!
it's so beautiful! i love the colors and the way it waves around the face! i think i agree with you about using a thicker yarn for the yellow, but i really like the yellow for the border! i hate to say that i actually dont like the tassles at all and i feel horrible about it O_O i think i pictured to just having the yarns knotted and hanging at the end...like many tassles...=____= guilty...i would buy this one if you could take the tassles off? but if it's impossible i am so sorry! what a terrible nuisance i am!!! get back to me on that ;__________;

Lol, don't feel bad about not liking the tassels! No big deal at all, truly. I should be able to easily take the big tassels off and transform them into fringe on the ends. I"ll work on that this weekend and get another picture to see what you think. :)
What about the tassel on the back of the head? Is that one okay? It really needs something to give it a bit of weight there, but I could see what else could do that, or possibly sew it a little differently so as not to need the tassel if you prefer?

And I'm really glad that you told me you don't like the tassels! I hate it when people don't like something but won't tell me, I'd much rather know. My grandmother makes this horrible icky cake every year for x-mas because no one wanted to tell her they don't like it...we all eat it, but we all hate it. Even my grandmother who only makes it because she thinks the kids want it. She won't eat it, lol. It drives me nuts!

I love this sprangy-thang! Someday I'll get you to teach me to sprang!
:iconchiomara:
How about...hmm...this weekend? (In other words...I would love to teach you!) :)

Hey Nata,

How 'bout once we get settled into the new house? How much effort and/or $$ does it take to get a loom frame like the one you used for this? :D

Can't wait to learn, but I'm afraid of picking up yet another addiction! Sometimes you're such a bad influence!
:iconchiomara:
Lol :D I am, I really am. :)

I don't remember how much the navajo loom cost right off the top of my head (I can find out, though, if you really want one.) But you honestly don't need a big loom like this one to do sprang. Almost anything that has a four-side surround with an open middle can be used. Like an empty picture frame or an empty cross stitch frame. Technically I can even do Sprang with my hair! (um...like a braid...not a scarf made out of hair or anything really wierd...)

Anyway...whenever you want to is fine! :)
:iconcrochetty-spinner:
If I didn't know you so well I would've thought you were proposing something kind of scary there with the hair sprang idea. However, there was no doubt in my mind that the hair was all staying attached :D.

Hey! we found the camera yesterday!!!! :boogie:
:iconchiomara:
lol :)

OMG?! really? Where was it??? Yay! more pictures :)
